Jane's enormous canvas hangs over the piano in my front room. I have a print of the women, too, framed in my bedroom. She loaned me the canvas because she ostensibly has nowhere to hang it herself. When I was looking for an image for the cover, I was thinking in black and white, also vertically. I was so wrong.
How could I have overlooked the sisters? Well, I didn't really but I was worried they'd suffer from being reduced, from having words top and bottom.
Of course they don't - the sisters have a life of their own.
Most fitting, when I hung the painting over the piano with Giya, she noticed the date it was finished: 1994, the year Giya was born.
